Whole and half-plate cameras were large and loading was a slow process. The quarter plate size (4.25 x 3.25 inches) was more portable but had the the same loading issues.
The quarter plate example shown on the left is a sophisticated design incorporating vertical and lateral lens shift and close-up capability. It has both a focusing screen and a well-calibated focus markings.

This example sold by Morley & Cooper was designed to overcome the loading deficiency and provided holders for 12 negatives which could all be pre-loaded and used in quick succession.

The reflex feature made these cameras less reliant on a tripod but the plate loading issue remained. When 120 size roll film became readily available, the plate could be replaced with a roll film carrier. The film had a smaller area than quarter plate so the usable field of view was reduced.
